Microsoft Windows CE originated as a stripped-down version of Windows95 and was targeted at the PED market, primarily PDAs. Unlike Palm, however, Windows CE was designed to support a much wider range of hardware. In comparison to the single-version Palm OS, Windows CE is a general-purpose OS, designed to support a number of hardware platforms, as opposed to being optimized for a specific hardware platform, as was the Palm OS. There are many different versions of the Windows CE kernel built for various CPUs, such as NEC MIPS, Intel or AMD x86, and Sega Dreamcast. Also, CE isn t just for PDAs; it was adapted to operate on Windows terminals, light notebook PCs, and even on car computers.
